St. Ambrose knocks off Judson in four sets

Four players put down double-digit kills to help St. Ambrose to a 25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23 win over Judson Tuesday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

Pedro Zang finished with a team-best 14 kills, Michael Bos added 11, and Charlie Flynn and Kam Dixon each had 12 to help the Bees improve to 12-6 overall and 2-1 in CCAC play.

The four combined for 51 kills and just 12 hitting errors.

After having little issue in the first set, the final three went down to the wire.

A Flynn and Zander Larson block had SAU in front 16-10 in the second before Judson (5-10, 1-3 CCAC) rallied to pull even at 20-20. After trading points, two straight Eagle errors gave the Bees a 23-21 lead. Judson got one point back but a serving error and a Bos kill gave St. Ambrose the set.

The Bees trailed throughout the majority of the third set. A block from Bos and Kainalu Ka'ahanui was followed by a Dixon kill to cut the deficit to 22-20 late, but SAU would get no closer than that as Judson extended the match.

The fourth was back-and-forth with the teams tied as late as 23-23 following a Zang kill. Zang then earned a match point with an ace, and Flynn wrapped things up with his 12th kill of the night.

Jon Guch finished with three kills and Ka'ahanui added two. The Bees hit .268 as a team while the Eagles finished at a .181 mark.

Anthony Anderson was credited with 32 assists. Matt Cannon had 13 and Felipe Prieto ended with six.

Ethan Karban led the team with 19 digs. Ka'ahanui also reached double figures with 11 digs. Zang picked up nine and Cannon and Anderson each had five. Bos had a team-best five blocks. Cole Rubio recorded a pair of aces in the win.

St. Ambrose will host Calumet Thursday.
