SAU stumbles in four sets to Governors State
In a battle for second place in the CCAC, St. Ambrose stumbled in a 25-20, 17-25, 28-26, 30-28 loss to Governors State Tuesday night in Lee Lohman Arena.
After splitting the first two sets, the Bees appeared poised to grab the third after Charlie Flynn's ace capped a six-point run that put SAU in front 21-18. But the Jaguars answered back with five straight points of their own to regain a 23-21 lead. A kill from Michael Bos and a block from Bos and Pedro Zang knotted the score at 23-23.
St. Ambrose (14-7, 4-2 CCAC) fought off three set points before Governors State (10-9, 4-1 CCAC) finally capitalized on the fourth chance to take the set.
The Bees got off to a fast start in the fourth with kills from Bos, Ian Cordes and Zang, along with a Bos-Zander Larson block, giving the team a quick 4-0 lead. A Kam Dixon kill put the advantage at 14-11 midway through the set.
But another 5-0 GSU run put the Jaguars in front 16-14.
Down 22-20, SAU rallied with kills from Dixon, Zang and Bos to go in front 23-22.
From there, the teams traded points. The Jaguars had three match points before the Bees fought back to earn a set point at 27-26 on a block from Flynn and Jon Guch. That was quickly erased and Governors State earned two more match points before finally closing out the victory.
Bos led the Bees with 16 kills. He had just two hitting errors to hit .538 for the match.
Zang put down 13 kills and Dixon finished with 12. Guch added eight kills.
Anthony Anderson had a team-best 34 assists. Felipe Prieto was credited with 16.
Ethan Karban paced SAU with 19 digs. Dixon picked up nine and Prieto came up with eight.
St. Ambrose had a big night defensively. Flynn was in on nine total blocks, including a pair of solo efforts. Bos and Guch recorded seven blocks apiece. Zang added four.
SAU will visit Olivet Nazarene Thursday.
