Bees fall to Tigers to suffer second straight setback
After three tight sets, St. Ambrose ran out of gas, and it led to the Bees' second straight loss, a 25-23, 26-28, 30-28, 25-15 setback at Olivet Nazarene Thursday night.
Each of the first three sets was decided by just two points. And after splitting the first two, SAU used a run behind the serving of Charlie Flynn to take a lead late in the third.
Flynn got it started with a kill and then served five straight points to put the Bees in front 23-21. The Tigers answered with a three-point run to retake a 24-23 lead.
Jon Guch erased ONU's first set point with a kill and then Ian Cordes put down a kill to give SAU a 25-24 lead. That was the first of four set points for the Bees, but they could not capitalize.
Olivet Nazarene (7-11, 2-3 CCAC) fought off all four of the set points, the last time tying the set at 28-28. The Tigers then put down back-to-back kills to steal the third.
St. Ambrose (14-8, 4-3 CCAC) got off to a strong start in the fourth. Michael Bos, Kam Dixon and Guch each had a kill to stake the Bees to an 8-5 advantage.
But then the Tigers went on a pair of five-point runs, interrupted only by two quick Bee points on a Guch kill and a block from Bos and Pedro Zang. The ONU spurt put SAU in a 15-10 hole.
Olivet Nazarene extended its lead to 20-12 and coasted to victory from there.
After recording 47 kills against just 13 hitting errors over the first three sets, St. Ambrose had five kills and nine errors alone in the fourth. ONU collected 10 kills and three errors in the final set.
Bos led the Bees with 22 kills. Dixon finished with eight and Guch added seven. Flynn, Cordes and Zang put down four kills apiece.
Anthony Anderson came up with 29 assists and 11 digs. Felipe Prieto was credited with 10 assists and six digs. Ethan Karban registered a team-best 17 digs.
SAU will visit Viterbo next Thursday.
