Fast start gets Bees season-opening win over Statesmen
St. Ambrose won four of the first five matches and picked up two huge wins late to defeat William Penn 25-20 in a dual in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Thursday night.
The Bees picked up bonus points in three of their victories, including Colin O'Grady's win by fall at the 2:31 mark at 184 pounds. That victory gave SAU a 22-15 lead after WPU had closed to within a single point at 16-15.
Jeremiah Morris sealed the team win with a 7-2 decision at heavyweight to close the dual.
That all came after St. Ambrose got off to a fast start.
Mick Chagnon started things with an 8-0 major decision at 125 pounds. After the Statesmen got a pin at 133 pounds, Guiseppe Guerra (12-8) and Josh Zeman (9-6) eaned decisions at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively.
Diego Machado followed with a pin inside the opening minute of his match at 157 pounds. That gave the Bees a 16-6 lead. William Penn won the next two matches to climb to within 16-15 before O'Grady and Morris slammed the door.
SAU returns to action Saturday at the Luther Hill Invitational in Indianola, Iowa.
