St. Ambrose competes at Grand View Open

St. Ambrose won several matches at the Grand View Open in Grimes, Iowa, Saturday. National qualifiers Diego Machado and Jayden Terronez led the way in the open division.

Machado advanced into the third round of the 157-pound bracket with a 17-1 tech fall victory and a 13-5 major decision. After a loss, Machado recovered to post a 4-1 win in sudden victory. His run ended with a loss in the fifth round of the consolation draw.

Terronez fell to a wrestler from Iowa State in his first-round match at 165 pounds. He then posted back-to-back pinfall victories, the first coming in 2:31 and the second in 2:17, before his day came to an end.

Anthony Sartori needed just 34 seconds to pin his opponent at 174 pounds. Mick Chagnon also won by fall, that coming in 3:44 in a bout at 125 pounds. Dylan Meiners and Tyler Casey each won one decision at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.

Also wrestling in the open division were Riece Graham (125 pounds), Isaac Martinez (141 pounds), Georgino Moraga (157 pounds), Ethan Blair (165 pounds), Slade Dias (165 pounds), Abdullah Razzak (285 pounds) and Jeremiah Morris (285 pounds).

Guiseppe Guerra had SAU's biggest run through the bracket as he finished second at 141 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division. Guerra collected three straight major decisions, by scores of 18-6, 14-1 and 9-1 to reach the quarterfinals. There, he earned a 9-4 victory. Guerra reached the championship match after a 10-1 major decision in the semifinals. He settled for second place.

Kayden White and Colin O'Grady also made impressive runs through their brackets in the freshman/sophomore division. White won four matches at 184 pounds, including decisions by scores of 14-7 and 9-6 to reach the championship quarterfinals. He added a 7-4 victory in the consolation bracket. O'Grady won three matches, all by pinfall, at 184 pounds. His wins came in 1:28, 3:56 and 3:47.

After losing in the second round, Jacob Alexander won consecutive matches on the consolation side at 133 pounds. He pinned an opponent in 1:39 and also earned a 9-7 decision. Tate O'Shea got a pin in 1:12 at 149 pounds.

AJ Trendle (125 pounds), Jaxson Holec (157 pounds) and Dio Ballas (157 pounds) also wrestled for the Bees in the freshman/sophomore division.

St. Ambrose will compete in the Coe Invitational next Saturday.
