Bees move to 3-0 with 28-12 win over Statesmen

St. Ambrose continued its early-season roll by taking down William Penn 28-12 in a dual at Lee Lohman Arena Thursday night. The victory moved the Bees to 3-0 this year.

SAU won five matches, earning bonus points in three of the wins, and Tyler Casey earned a forfeit victory at heavyweight in a battle of Heart of America programs.

The Bees got off to a fast start, winning three of the first four bouts.

It took Tyler Clarke just over two minutes to give St. Ambrose the lead as he pinned his opponent at 125 pounds in 2:10. After William Penn got a decision at 133 pounds as SAU's Mitchell Murphy fell 7-5 to the ninth-ranked wrestler in the NAIA, Guiseppe Guerra and Josh Zeman followed with big victories for SAU. Guerra, ranked No. 23 in the country, earned a 12-4 major decision at 141 pounds and Zeman won via pinfall in 1:56 at 149 pounds to help the Bees to a 16-3 advantage.

St. Ambrose lost decisions at both 157 and 165 pounds, including Georgino Moraga's narrow 17-16 loss to the 23rd-ranked wrestler in the 157-pound weight class, as the Statesmen closed to within 16-9.

Brody Schmidt got the Bees back on track with an 8-2 decision at 174 pounds. Nicolas Makwala followed that with a 10-7 win at 184 pounds. 

Kayden Marolf (165 pounds) and Jeremiah Morris (197) dropped competitive decisions in the SAU win.

The Bees will next compete at the Grand View Open on Saturday, Nov. 15.
