SAU finished sixth at Battle in the Bluegrass
The St. Ambrose University wrestling team turned in a strong overall performance at the Battle in the Bluegrass, finishing sixth out of 16 teams in a highly competitive field. The Bees totaled 71.5 team points, placing among several nationally recognized programs at the two-day event.
St. Ambrose was led by a pair of runner-up finishes from Guiseppe Guerra and Chuck Fitzgerald, along with a top-five placement from Tyler Clarke and multiple bonus-point performances throughout the lineup.
Individual Highlights
133 – Tyler Clarke (5th place, 13.0 points)
Clarke battled back through the consolation bracket to earn a fifth-place finish. He recorded a quick pin in the quarterfinals and capped his tournament with a forfeit win in the fifth-place match, collecting 13 team points.
141 – Guiseppe Guerra (2nd place, 17.0 points)
Guerra delivered one of the top performances of the tournament, advancing to the championship bout at 141 pounds. He opened with a first-round fall and followed with back-to-back decision wins to reach the finals. Guerra came up just short in the title match, dropping a 4–2 decision, but finished with 17 team points and a runner-up medal.
149 – Chuck Fitzgerald (2nd place, 17.0 points)
Fitzgerald matched Guerra with a second-place finish at 149, stringing together three straight wins—one major decision and two decisions—to reach the finals. His run included victories over wrestlers from Marian and Friends before falling in the championship match.
157 – Georgino Moraga (4.5 points)
Moraga showcased resilience at 157, opening with a tech fall and responding to a championship-side loss with two wins in the consolation rounds, including a major decision, before exiting late in the bracket.
157 – Kayden Marolf (8th place, 9.5 points)
Marolf picked up two falls on the day, one in championship action and one in the consolations, to place eighth overall and add valuable points to the team total.
174 – Jean-Luc Guerra (3.0 points)
After an early setback, Guerra rebounded with a first-period fall in the consolations before being eliminated in the fourth round.
184 – Nicolas Makwala (8th place, 5.5 points)
Makwala responded to an opening-round loss with a tech fall and a sudden-victory win in the consolation bracket, finishing eighth at 184.
184 – Colin O'Grady (3.0 points)
O'Grady opened his tournament with a fall before being eliminated in the consolation rounds.
Brody Schmidt (174 pounds) and Jeremiah Morris (197 pounds) also wrestled for the Bees.
