Bees earn two place winners at Missouri Valley Invitational
The St. Ambrose University wrestling team competed in a deep, two-day field at the Missouri Valley Invitational on January 23–24 in Marshall, Missouri. The Bees were led by a fifth-place finish from Guiseppe Guerra and an eighth-place showing from Georgino Moraga, while several wrestlers made extended consolation runs against nationally competitive opposition.
Guiseppe Guerra | 141
Guerra turned in one of the top performances of the tournament for St. Ambrose, battling back through the consolation bracket to claim fifth place at 141 pounds. After opening with a 10–0 major decision, Guerra dropped a narrow 4–2 match before rallying with a string of victories, including two major decisions and a forfeit win. He capped his tournament with a clutch sudden-victory win (14–11) in the fifth-place match.
Georgino Moraga | 149
Moraga put together a long consolation run at 149, winning five consecutive matches on the backside. His rally included four decision victories, a major decision, and a forfeit before narrowly missing a top-six finish.
Tyler Clarke | 133
Clarke earned a win in the consolation rounds after dropping his opening bout, recording a 13–10 decision before being eliminated by fall.
Mitchell Murphy | 141
Murphy delivered a strong effort, opening his tournament with a 58-second fall. He rebounded from an early setback with another pin in the consolation rounds before running into eventual deep-place finishers.
Chuck Fitzgerald | 157
Fitzgerald opened the tournament with a win before moving into the consolation bracket, where he earned a technical fall and a close decision victory. He was eliminated in the fifth round after facing a ranked opponent late in the bracket.
Jean-Luc Guerra | 165
Guerra rebounded from a close one-point loss with a 14–5 major decision in the wrestlebacks before being stopped by a technical fall later in the bracket.
Brody Schmidt | 174
Schmidt bounced back from an opening-round loss with a strong consolation run, including a late fall and two additional wins before exiting in the fifth round.
Colin O'Grady | 184
O'Grady faced a deep national field at 184 pounds, competing in both championship and consolation action against quality opponents.
Nicolas Makwala | 184
Makwala battled through a challenging bracket at 184 pounds, gaining experience against nationally tested wrestlers during both championship and consolation rounds.
Josh Zeman (149 pounds), Brad Surwillo (165 pounds), and Jeremiah Morris (197 pounds) wrestled for the Bees.
St. Ambrose returns home on Saturday, February 7th, as they take on William Woods at 2:00 p.m.
