Thompson's homer helps SAU take doubleheader from Calumet

Madelyn Thompson hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead St. Ambrose to a 2-1 win over Calumet St. Joseph in the second game of a doubleheader Friday. The Bees won the opener 6-1 to move to 23-9 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the CCAC.

The Bees trailed 1-0 entering the fifth in the nightcap. Olivia McClintock drew a one-out walk and stole second before getting erased on Christina Pembrook's fielder's choice ground ball. But Thompson followed with her team-leading sixth homer of the year to put the Bees in front.

Pembrook made that lead hold up, working around a pair of base runners in the sixth inning and stranding another runner in the seventh to complete her fourth and fifth innings in relief in earning the victory.

Thompson's blast was one of just three hits for St. Ambrose in Game 2. Morgan Krieger doubled in the second inning and Colleen Barrett singled in the third.

Pembrook was touched up for a single run, that coming in the fourth inning. She entered in relief of Sarah Willman, who allowed two hits over a pair of scoreless innings.

St. Ambrose also got a strong pitching performance in the opener as Jane Thomas and Ella Specht combined to allow just four hits and a single run in the 6-1 win. Thomas surrendered three hits while striking out four over six innings before Specht threw a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

The Bees got all the offense they would need in the first inning. McClintock led off with a single before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Colleen McCue then walked and both runners were safe on a double steal for a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, Kopaska reached on an error which allowed all three runners to score.

McClintock picked up an RBI single in the third inning and Thompson drove in a run in the sixth.

McClintock finished 3-for-4 while Briana Olson collected a pair of hits as part of a nine-hit attack.

SAU will return to St. Vincent's to host Trinity International in another CCAC doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
