SAU loses doubleheader to No. 11 Grand View
Behind a two-run home run from Becca Haag and a run-scoring double off the bat of Alena Holder, St. Ambrose built a 5-1 lead after three innings over No. 11 Grand View.
But the Vikings rallied, pushing four runs across in the fifth and adding three more in the sixth to win the first game of Thursday's doubleheader 9-6. GVU won the second game 17-4 to complete the sweep.
Haag's homer, which also scored Anna Engberg, came in the bottom of the first. Holder followed with a triple and later scored when Mya Millsaps reached on an error to give St. Ambrose (8-10) a quick 3-0 lead.
Then, in the third, Holder doubled in Haag and another Viking error ultimately allowed Holder to score to extend the lead to 5-1.
Grand View (12-6) got one run back in the fourth before taking the lead in the fifth. Haag and Holder tied things up in the bottom of the frame. Haag reached on a two-out single. She took second on a wild pitch and came around to score on Holder's double to center.
But the tie didn't last long as the Vikings struck for three more runs in the sixth and that proved to be the difference.
Haag and Holder each finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. They combined for five runs scored. Millsaps had the other SAU hit.
Leah Maro worked the first 4 1/3 innings before giving way to Bianca Shorter. Shorter was charged with the loss.
GVU errupted for five runs over the first two innings of the second game. Reagan Engberg's ground out allowed Parker Leonard to score in the bottom of the second to get the Bees on the board.
Kylee Vaughn singled in Leonard in the fourth, and Brynnlin Kroymann had an RBI double and Leonard added an RBI single in the fifth to close the gap to 7-4.
But the Vikings put together eight hits, and took advantage of a Bee error, to score 10 runs in the sixth to break the game open.
Kylie Schult was 3-for-3 at the plate while Leonard collected two hits. Anna Engberg, Haag and Holder also had hits.
Shorter took the loss after pitching three innings. Shea Meech worked the final three frames.
SAU will visit Mount Mercy Wednesday.
