St. Ambrose sweeps Mount Mercy

St. Ambrose scored six runs twice to sweep a doubleheader from Mount Mercy by scores of 6-5 and 6-2 Thursday afternoon in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Bees used a pair of squeeze bunts, one in the seventh inning and one in the eighth, to win the opener in extra innings.

Trailing 5-4 in the seventh, Becca Haag, who hit a two-run home run to give SAU a 4-3 lead in the fifth, got down a bunt to score Shai Erdrich with the tying run.

Then, an inning later, Ellie Downing laid down a bunt to plate Mya Millsaps with what proved to be the winning run.

With one out, Leah Maro induced a ground ball to get a force out at the plate in the bottom of the seventh to close out her complete-game victory.

SAU's top three hitters in the lineup accounted for seven hits, five runs scored and four RBIs.

Anna Engberg finished 3-for-3 with two runs and had an RBI single in the third. Haag went 2-for-3 with her three RBIs and a run scored. Erdrich was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.

Haag and Engberg accounted for the game's first run in the top of the first. Haag stole second and a throwing error from the Mustang catcher allowed Engberg to cross the plate.

After Mount Mercy went up 3-1, Engberg's RBI single in the third and Haag's two-run shot in the fifth put St. Ambrose (10-10) in front 4-3. The Mustangs went back in front with single runs in the fifth and sixth before the Bees rallied late.

Ellie Downing and Brynnlin Kroymann also had hits in the win.

Seven different Bees had hits in the second game. Shea Meech led the way going 3-for-4. Haag and Alena Holder each had two hits.

It was Holder's triple that got the scoring started when she drove in Haag for a 1-0 lead in the first. Meech then singled Holder in.

MMU scored once in the second but SAU added to its lead in the third. Engberg scored on an error before Meech singled to plate Haag for a 4-1 lead.

Reagan Engberg ripped a two-run single in the fifth to score both Holder and Maddi Larsen for a 6-1 advantage. Mount Mercy scored its final run in the sixth.

Anna Engberg, Kylie Schult and Kaitlyn Haag also collected hits.

That made a winner of Bianca Shorter, who went the distance, allowing just five hits and two runs over seven innings.

St. Ambrose will now turn its attention to conference play. The Bees will host Mount Mary Friday in the Ambrose Dome in the first CCAC game of the season. The two teams will play a doubleheader at St. Vincent's Saturday.
