St. Ambrose splits one-run decisions with St. Francis

St. Ambrose and St. Francis split a pair of one-run decisions Sunday at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex. The Bees won the opener 5-4 in eight innings before the Saints took the second game 2-1.

The three-game series will be decided by a single game in Joliet, Ill., Monday afternoon.

In the opener, after Becca Haag's leadoff homer run in the bottom of the sixth, tied the game at 4-4, the contest moved to extra innings. Leah Maro, who went the distance, retired the side in order in the top of the eighth.

In the bottom half, Haag and Kylee Claypool drew back-to-back two-out walks. Then Taylor Martyn came through with a single to right to bring in Haag with the winning run.

The walk-off win capped a back-and-forth affair.

St. Francis (21-8, 7-1 CCAC) struck first with a run in the top of the first. But in the bottom of the inning, Anna Engberg had an RBI double and Alena Holder a run-scoring single to put the Bees in front.

The Saints came back to tie the game in the fourth and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth, only for Haag's homer to tie the game moments later.

St. Ambrose (17-11, 7-1 CCAC) out-hit St. Francis 9-7 with Haag and Shai Erdrich collecting two hits apiece. Reagan Engberg and Mya Millsaps also had hits in the win.

Maro allowed just three earned runs over eight innings while striking out four.

The Bees received a second strong pitching performance in the second game.

Bianca Shorter went all seven innings, surrendering just two earned runs while striking out two.

But SAU managed just six hits and a single run. The run came in the fifth when Anna Engberg singled to plate Reagan Engberg to tie the game at 1-1.

In the top of the seventh, a leadoff double for USF came around to score to break the tie. Anna Engberg singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for her second hit of the game, but was caught stealing to end the contest.

Erdrich, Holder, Haag and Millsaps also had hits.

Monday's game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
