Maro no-hits IU South Bend to run winning streak to nine
Leah Maro made sure SAU's winning ways would continue Friday afternoon in the Ambrose Dome.
The junior pitcher tossed a no-hitter while striking out seven to lead St. Ambrose to an 8-0 five-inning win over Indiana South Bend.
The victory continued the Bees' perfect month of April and extended the team's winning streak to nine games.
Maro had just one hitter reach base, that coming on a two-out error in the top of the first inning. She retired the final 13 batters she faced, including a string of five consecutive strikeouts spanning the second and third innings.
Maro punctuated the win by striking out the final hitter she faced to pick up her 14th win of the season.
St. Ambrose (26-12, 16-2 CCAC) was kept off the board until the third inning, but then the offense exploded for eight runs over the next two frames.
Shai Erdrich was hit by a pitch and Anna Engberg drew a walk to start the third. Kylee Claypool followed with an RBI single. Then Shea Meech brought in Engberg with a ground out before Taylor Martyn doubled in Claypool for a 3-0 lead.
An inning later, Reagan Engberg started things with a base hit. Mya Millsaps reached on a bunt single and Erdrich singled to push the lead to 4-0.
Becca Haag ripped a two-run single to center to keep the inning going. Claypool tripled to right to score Haag, and later came in on Meech's hit.
Seven different Bees contributed to the 10-hit attack. Martyn finished 3-for-3 while Claypool added two hits.
The two teams will complete their three-game series with a Senior Day doubleheader Saturday at the St. Vincent's Athletic Complex.
