St. Ambrose reaches 30 wins with sweep of CCSJ

St. Ambrose reached the 30-win mark for the first time since 2019 by sweeping a doubleheader at Calumet by scores of 9-1 and 3-1 Sunday afternoon.

Leah Maro went the distance in the opener, striking out 11 over her seven innings of work. She allowed just seven hits and one walk.

The only run she allowed came in the bottom of the first. It came after Anna Engberg's ground out scored Shai Erdrich in the top of the inning.

Engberg gave the Bees the lead for good in the third with an RBI single that again plated Erdrich. Engberg then ripped a two-run single to center in the fifth that scored Maddi Larsen and Erdrich to extend the lead to 4-1.

Alena Holder had a two-run double and later came around to score as part of a five-run fifth inning. Erdrich had an RBI in the sixth and Parker Leonard singled in Kylee Vaughn in the seventh to account for the final score.

Engberg and Holder each had two hits. Vaughn, Leonard, Kylie Schult and Becca Haag also had hits.

In the second game, Bianca Shorter allowed just four hits while striking out five in a complete-game victory. Like Maro, she surrendered a run in the first before holding the Crimson Wave scoreless the rest of the way.

St. Ambrose (30-12, 20-2 CCAC) tied the game in the third with an RBI single to bring in Engberg.

Parker Leonard broke the tie in the sixth with a base hit to plate Reagan Engberg. Anna Engberg ended her big day with another RBI single in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Leonard finished 3-for-3 while Anna Engberg, Haag and Schult each collected two hits. Erdrich and Reagan Engberg had the other two SAU hits.

The wins set up an important three-game series this week. The Bees will play a doubleheader at conference-leading and No. 23-ranked Saint Xavier Tuesday before playing a single game against the Cougars Wednesday at St. Vincent's.
