Winning streak snapped at 13 by nationally-ranked Cougars
St. Ambrose saw its 13-game winning streak come to an end as No. 23 Saint Xavier swept a doubleheader from SAU by scores of 7-2 and 11-0 Tuesday afternoon in Chicago.
In a matchup of the top two teams in the CCAC, it was the Cougars who took the first two games of the three-game set.
The Bees grabbed a 1-0 lead just two batters into the first game. Shai Erdrich led off with a single, stole second and scored on Anna Engberg's double to left. SAU could have added to its left, but in a sign of things to come, the Bees left the bases loaded.
A three-run home run in the bottom of the first gave SXU the lead. Kylee Claypool singled to score Engberg in the third to trim the deficit to 3-2, but again SAU left three runners on base.
St. Ambrose (30-14, 20-4 CCAC) stranded two more runners in the fourth, one in the fifth and left them loaded in the seventh.
Saint Xavier (36-10, 25-1 CCAC) scored a single run in the third before adding two runs in the fourth and another in the sixth.
Taylor Martyn finished 3-for-3 and drew one of the team's six walks while Erdrich, Engberg, Kylee Claypool and Alena Holder also had hits.
Leah Maro took the loss in a complete-game effort.
The Cougars took control early of the second game, plating five runs in the bottom of the first. They added six more in the second in the five-inning win.
The Bees managed just two hits. Martyn had a two-out single in the first and Brynnlin Kroymann added a pinch-hit single leading off the fourth.
SAU left at least one runner on base in four of the five frames.
Bianca Shorter took the loss. She pitched three innings while Shea Meech worked one inning.
The teams will close their series with a single game at St. Vincent's on Wednesday before St. Ambrose will close the regular season with a doubleheader at Olivet Nazarene on Sunday.
