Saint Xavier pulls away late to defeat SAU 7-2

Saint Xavier broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out run in the fifth and broke things open with a four-run seventh to defeat St. Ambrose 7-2 at St. Vincent's Wednesday afternoon.

The Bees trailed 2-0 after allowing a pair of runs in the top of the first. SAU drew even in the fourth.

Taylor Martyn led off with a double and scored on Alena Holder's base hit. After Becca Haag grounded out, Holder came in to tie the game at 2-2 on Kylee Claypool's RBI ground ball.

But the 23rd-ranked Cougars came back to take the lead in the top of the fifth on a two-out single.

St. Ambrose (30-15, 20-5 CCAC) had an opportunity to tie in the sixth after Holder singled and pinch runner Mya Millsaps stole second with one out. But Haag and Claypool came up empty.

Saint Xavier (37-10, 26-1 CCAC) collected six of their 13 hits, and took advantage of an SAU error, in the seventh inning to score four runs.

The Bees stranded two runners in the bottom of the seventh.

Holder finished with two of SAU's seven hits. Martyn, Haag, Claypool, Shai Erdrich and Reagan Engberg had the others.

Leah Maro took the loss.

St. Ambrose will close the regular season Sunday with a doubleheader at Olivet Nazarene.
