Bees drop season-opener to Wildcats

St. Ambrose traveled to Canton, Mo. On Saturday, February 28th, for their first game of the season against Culver-Stockton. The Bees made a push in the third period, before ultimately falling short to the Wildcats 5-10.

The Bees struck first, less than two minutes after the first draw. Abby Vanderwarren buried a shot in the back of the net unassisted. That would be the only goal for St. Ambrose in the first period. In the second period, the Bees cut the Wildcat's lead 2-5 with a man-up free position goal from Raegan Dotterer with five and a half minutes remaining in the half.

The third was a breakout period for St. Ambrose. Similar to her first goal, Vanderwarren attacked the net early, scoring on a man-up free position. Ten minutes later, Karsen Jummati netted a free-position goal of her own. With seconds remaining in the third period, Dotterer scored the final goal for the Bees.

Jummati led the team with nine shots, followed by Vanderwarren with four shots. Dotterer and Cailey Kramer each put up three shots, and Morgan O'Malley had two.

Brooke Arendt led the team defensively with four groundballs. Laney Cunningham and Becca Schrage each tallied three. Vanderwarren, Jummati, Reina Chrobak, and Saige Carlton earned two. Dotterer, Kramer, Eve Hanlon, Gina Tinerella, Brielle Taylor, and Eryn Cornwell collected one.

Chrobak started in the goal for the Bees earned one save. Carlton came in for relief in the second period, snagging two saves of her own.

St. Ambrose is back in action on Saturday, March 7th at 11 a.m. as the host University of Wisconsin-Stout at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex.
