Brunson notches a brace in defeat over Judson

Backed by a Kaitlyn Brunson offensive effort, the Bees upended the Eagles of Judson University yesterday afternoon in Elgin, Ill. St. Ambrose scored in each half of play to get back into the winning column, especially important in conference play. Judson did find a goal in the second half but it would not be enough as SAU defeated the Eagles 2-1 at Dawson Field.

Judson managed to secure the first shot and corner kick of the match, but the Bees would not let that detor them as they found their offensive rhythm. Brunson peppered the Eagles' keeper, forcing her into a save in the 16th minute of play.

The scoring started for SAU after a Bee uniform was taken down in the penalty box to draw a foul. Brunson was the player who stood over the ball for St. Ambrose, as earlier in the season she sank a beautifully placed penalty kick shot. She would do it again this time as she snuck a low shot right past the goal keeper for the first goal of the match to give the Bees some room to breathe.

Judson would continue to fly forward as the Bees made them earn their attacking chances. But, Grace Kuchar would shut down any hope as she owned her net.

Just before halftime, Brunson, Charlise Martel, and Mia Hefner would all have shots fly towards the net to give the Bees a chance to double their lead. Time and time again, the Eagles' goal keeper would make brilliant saves to keep it difficult for SAU.

St. Ambrose would head into the half time break with a 1-0 lead and momentum from the 15 minutes of offensive power prior. The shot totals at the end of the first half were dead even at seven apiece, but St. Ambrose out shot Judson in the last 45 minutes of play which proved to be the difference in the match.

The difference would come in the 73rd minute of action as it was Brunson yet again to double the lead for the Bees. As the Bees charged up the field, Brunson took a pass, found herself open space with a touch and drilled a shot into the back of the net over the outstretched arms of the Eagles' goal keeper.

Eariler in the half, Genevieve Bowyer thought her shot from distance would be the difference but it sailed high and hit the crossbar to keep the score at 1-0.

No more than six minutes later, Judson would score their first goal of the match to tighten things up at 2-1 with 11 minutes left in action.

Not much else would come for either team as the Bees won another conference match 2-1.

Brunson registered six of her seven shots on net. Martel accounted for three shots on goal for the Bees. Hefner, Kendall Wendt, and Jenna Horst all collected a shot on goal. The Bees earned a total of 17 shots on the afternoon. They also held the edge in corner kicks with four.

Kuchar made four saves on five shots to move the Bees to 4-5-2, 2-2 overall.

Next up, St. Ambrose will travel to Crown Point, Ind. as they face Indiana-Northwest next Wed. Kick off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST at Sparta Dome.
