Bees defeat Illinois Institute of Technology

St. Ambrose stayed on its early-season roll, taking duals from Illinois Tech Saturday afternoon at the Davenport Central pool.

The men won 130-58 to remain unbeaten in three duals this year while the women moved to 2-1 in duals with a 124-101 win.

Catie Schimmelpfenning and Andrea Adam each won a pair of events for the SAU women.

Schimmelpfenning won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events in 25.85 seconds and 56.02 seconds, respectively. Adam, the defending national champion in both events, won the 1-meter dive with a score of 235.90 and the 3-meter dive with a 156.70. Teammate Taylor Madison took second in diving with scores of 239.75 and 138.40.

Kelly Baughman was the other individual winner for St. Ambrose, coming in first as part of a 1-2-3 finish for the Bees in the 100-yard breaststroke. Her time of 1:18.41 held off teammates Laura Williams (1:22.72) and Grace Johanns (1:31.08).

Schimmelpfenning and Baughman also teamed with Bethany Anderson and Dani Crum to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:44.31.

Crum collected two second-place finishes - coming in less than a second behind the winner in the 100-yard backstroke and also taking runner-up honors in the 200-yard freestyle. Anderson placed second in the 200-yard butterfly.

Victor Del Rio Foces led the men with a pair of individual wins. He took the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:02.73. SAU's Kevin Krupitzer was second in 2:02.99. Del Rio Foces also won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 56.87 seconds.

St. Ambrose finished 1-2-3 in two events. Jonathan Whittle won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.28 seconds to beat out teammates Jason Schuler (22.85) and Ryan Warrick (22.87). Then Reece Powell claimed the 100-yard freestyle event in 50.05 seconds by holding off Warrick (50.32) and Whittle (50.45).

Nathan Kuszynski finished with a winning-time of 5:00.60 in the 500-yard freestyle while Justin Fales' effort of 5:05.84 was good for second place. Krupitzer won the 100-yard breaststoke by touching the wall in 1:00.33.

Del Rio Foces, Krupitzer, Kuszynski and Warrick won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:37.27, and Whittle, Powell, Warrick and Schuler took the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:30.20.

Schuler (100-yard butterfly), Del Rio Foces (200-yard freestyle) and Sam Sutter (1000-yard freestyle) earned second-place finishes in the dual.

The Bees will next head to Nebraska for duals at Saint Mary Friday and Midland on Saturday.
