St. Ambrose wins fourth straight LAC crowns

Behind a pair of Swimmers of the Championship, St. Ambrose cruised to its fourth straight Liberal Arts Championships at the RUSD Aquatics Center in Mount Pleasant, Wis.

Maxi Jacquet was named the Men's Swimmer of the Meet to lead the SAU men to 736 team points. Illinois Tech took second with 521 points and Minnesota Morris was third with 368.

On the women's side, Irene Artabe earned Swimmer of the Meet honors. She helped the Bees rack up 631 points to outdistance Minnesota Morris (467) and Illinois Tech (458).

The SAU men won 10 total individual conference titles with Jacquet winning three individual crowns. He won the 200 IM in 1:52.19, the 100 back in 49.24 seconds and the 200 back in 1:47.99.

Cory Werrett won two championships, taking the 50 free in 20.12 seconds and the 100 breast in 55.45 seconds.

Five different Bees each won one event.

Marat Usov won the 400 IM in 4:02.49, Jayden Coetzer won the 100 fly in 50.68 seconds, Juan De Armas won the 1650 free in 16:19.27, Luke Thomas won the 200 breast in 2:01.79 and Luke Sproule won the 200 fly in 1:55.75.

The SAU men also won gold in all five relays.

Sproule, Usov, Coetzer and De Armas won the 800 free relay (6:52.87); Carter Gaber, Werrett, Riley Stevenson and Carter Prull won the 200 free relay (1:23.25); Jacquet, Werrett, Coetzer and Stevenson won the 400 medley relay (3:21.04) and 200 medley relay (1:30.83); and Gavin Hopewell, Stevenson, Jacquet and Werrett won the 400 free relay (3:02.52).

The St. Ambrose women came away with seven individual championships. Artabe matched Jacquet with three. She won the 200 IM in 2:09.64, the 100 fly in 58.25 seconds and the 100 back in 59.01 seconds.

Bridget O'Grady won both the 100 breast (1:05.48) and the 200 breast (2:24.95). Grace Bobeldyk touched the wall in 5:13.66 to win the 500 free. Sophia Ewanic was the other Bee champion. She won the 200 back in 2:12.01.

The Bees also won four relays.

Anna Gute, Bryn Kiley, Ewanic and Artabe won the 200 free relay (1:39.64); Artabe, O'Grady, Bobeldyk and Gute won both the 400 medley relay (3:56.88) and 200 medley relay (1:47.69); and Gute, Bobeldyk, Artabe and Kiley won the 400 free relay (3:36.36).

St. Ambrose will now prepare for the NAIA Championships beginning Mar. 4 in Elkhart, Ind.
