Multiple All-American finishes highlight NAIA Championships
It was another strong finish for the Bees at the NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships in Elkhart, Ind.
The St. Ambrose men ended eighth overall and the Bee women took 13th, and the two teams combined for multiple All-American finishes.
SAU had nine individual All-American performances, and three individuals earned All-American status in multiple events.
Cory Werrett led the way, repeating as an All-American in three events.
Werrett finished third in the 100 breast (53.76 second), fifth in the 100 free (43.82 seconds) and sixth in the 50 free (20.01 seconds) after placing fourth, sixth and fifth in those same events, respectively, a year ago.
Maxi Jacquet is an All-American in two backstroke events, finishing sixth in the 100 back in 48.99 seconds and placing eighth in the 200 back in 1:48.59.
Marat Usov is the other All-American on the men's side after he took sixth in the 500 free in 4:31.31.
For the women, Mia Almeida is an All-American in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions. She earned a score of 230.35 in 1-meter and a score of 244.70 in 3-meter to finish fourth in each event.
After picking up All-American honors in the 100 back in each of the last two seasons, Irene Artabe is now an All-American in the 100 fly by finishing eighth in 57.81 seconds.
The SAU men received All-American honorable mention in all five relays. The 200 free relay team of Jacquet, Werrett, Riley Stevenson and Gavin Hopewell placed fifth (1:21.53); the 200 medley relay team of Jacquet, Werrett, Jayden Coetzer and Stevenson placed sixth (1:28.95); the 400 free relay team of Jacquet, Werrett, Stevenson and Usov placed seventh (3:00.97); the 800 free relay team of Werrett, Usov, Coetzer and Juan De Armas placed seventh (6:42.34); and the 400 medley relay team of Jacquet, Werrett, Coetzer and Stevenson placed eighth (3:18.33).
While the top eight earned All-American recognition in individual events, St. Ambrose also had several qualify for the B finals.
For the men, Usov was ninth in the 400 IM, Coetzer was ninth in the 100 back and 10th in the 200 back, Stevenson was 11th in the 100 back, Jacquet was 12th in the 200 IM, Hopewell was 13th in the 200 back, and De Armas was 16th in the 500 free.
Grace Bobeldyk earned a pair of top-16 finishes for the Bee women. She was 10th in the 1650 free and 15th in the 200 free. Bridget O'Grady placed 13th in the 100 breast. Artabe was 15th in the 100 back.
All five SAU women's relays placed among the top 16. The 400 medley relay team of Artabe, O'Grady, Bobeldyk and Anna Gute placed 10th (3:56.66); the 200 medley relay team of Artabe, O'Grady, Bobeldyk and Gute placed 11th (1:47.41); the 800 free relay team of Bobeldyk, Artabe, Bryn Kiley and Sophia Ewanic placed 12th (8:00.46); the 200 free relay team of Artabe, Ewanic, Bobeldyk and Kiley placed 16th (1:40.61); and the 400 free relay team of Artabe, O'Grady, Bobeldyk and Kiley placed 16th (3:41.66).
