St. Ambrose splits close duals with Edgewood
St. Ambrose battled Edgewood in a pair of competitive duals Sunday afternoon in Madison, Wis. The men came away with a 5-2 win while the women fell 4-3.
The SAU women actually won five of the nine matches, but with doubles only counting as a single point, the Bees came up a point short.
Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Hayden Evans needed a tiebreaker in their 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 1 doubles. Yeva Shershan and Julia Turek came through late in their 7-5 win at No. 3. Catherine Meystrik and Jenna Smithmeyer had little trouble in their 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Meystrik also cruised in her 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles. SAU's other singles win came at No. 3 as Evans prevailed in a third-set super-tiebreaker 4-6, 7-5, 1-0. Smithmeyer dropped her match at No. 4 in a third-set super-breaker. Aguirre Cortez (6-4, 6-3), Turek (6-4, 6-4) and Shershan (7-5, 7-6) each suffered a tough loss.
The Bee men won the top four singles matches en route to their 5-2 win.
Emilio Palencia needed a third-set breaker in his 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 win at No. 4 singles. Gabriel Guimaray (6-4, 7-5), Shingai Manyonga (6-2, 7-5) and Miguel Sampaio (6-2, 7-5) won in straight sets at No. 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The Bees nearly came out victorious in all six singles matches, but both Austin Hutton (No. 5) and Ethan Valtman (No. 6) fell in third sets.
St. Ambrose earned the doubles point by sweeping the three doubles matches. Sebastian Arevalo and Guimaray earned a 6-4 win at No. 1. The No. 2 team of Manyonga and Sampaio won 6-1 while the No. 3 team of Palencia and Hutton won 6-3.
The SAU men and women will play duals at Monmouth Wednesday.
