St. Ambrose stumbles in loss to Central
Dropping four of the six singles matches cost St. Ambrose in a 4-3 loss to Central at the QC Tennis Club in Moline, Ill., Friday afternoon.
The Bees earned wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.
Chiara Aguirre Cortez needed a third-set super-tiebreaker in her 6-2, 4-6, 10-3 win at the top spot. Julia Turek cruised in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3.
Hayden Evans nearly flipped the match after dropping the first set of her match at No. 2 singles. But she came up short in a third-set breaker, falling 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
The bottom three Bees each fell in straight sets. Jenna Smithmeyer lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4, Catherine Meystrik fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5, and Yeva Shershan lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.
SAU (6-3) earned the doubles point.
Aguirre Cortez and Evans had no problems in their 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Smithmeyer and Paige Owens combined for a 6-3 win at No. 3. The No. 2 team of Meystrik and Turek lost 6-2.
St. Ambrose will host Missouri Baptist Tuesday back at the QC Tennis Club.
