SAU men, women defeat Wartburg
Back from their annual Spring Break trips, the St. Ambrose men and women picked up victories at Wartburg Wednesday afternoon. The men won 5-2 and the women won 4-3.
In the men's dual, the Bees won four singles matches, three of those coming in straight sets.
Sebastian Arevalo earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at the top spot. Gabriel Guimaray picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2. Shingai Manyonga had little trouble in his 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
The other three singles matches were extended to third-set super-tiebreakers. Miguel Sampaio got the lone super-breaker win for the Bees, earning a 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 decision at No. 3.
Samy Khiyara fell 6-0, 2-6, 10-8 at No. 4 singles and Austin Hutton lost 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 at No. 6.
In competitive doubles action, St. Ambrose (10-3) won two of the three matches. Arevalo and Guimaray won 6-4 at No. 1 and Sampaio and Khiyara won 7-5 at No. 2. The No. 3 team of Manyonga and Emilio Palencia lost 6-4.
The SAU women lost the doubles point but bounced back by winning four singles matches to win the meet.
Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Hayden Evans cruised in their singles matches at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Aguirre Cortez won 6-3, 6-1 and Evans was victorious 6-2, 6-0.
Catherine Meystrik and Jenna Smithmeyer each rebounded after dropping the first set to prevail in third-set super-breakers. Meystrik won 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 at No. 4 and Smithmeyer came out with a 0-6, 7-5, 10-7 win at No. 5.
Julia Turek at No. 3 and Yeva Shershan at No. 6 lost in singles play.
St. Ambrose (7-6) got a 6-3 doubles win from Turek and Meystrik at No. 2. The top team of Aguirre Cortez and Evans and the No. 3 team of Smithmeyer and Paige Owens fell.
The SAU men and women will open CCAC play on Friday, Apr. 3, when the Bees host Judson.
