Senior Day dual vs. Augustana rained out

St. Ambrose honored its eight seniors before its final home dual of the regular season against Augustana Thursday. But after the Senior Day festivities, rain forced play to be stopped in the middle of singles action at the North Scott tennis courts.

The Bees recognized Sebastian Arevalo, Gabriel Guimaray, Marcus Lang, Esteban Rocha and Cade Timmons from the men's team and Hayden Evans, Kate Jones and Julia Turek for the women.

SAU lost the doubles point in both the men's and women's duals and singles play advanced into the second set before rain halted play.

On the men's side, all three doubles matches went down to the wire.

The No. 2 team of Miguel Sampaio and Samy Khiyara won 7-5 for the lone SAU win. The No. 1 team of Sebastian Arevalo and Gabriel Guimaray lost 7-6 (7-4) while the No. 3 team of Shingai Manyonga and Austin Hutton lost 6-4.

The only singles match that was decided was at No. 6 when Esteban Rocha, trailing 3-2, was forced to retire.

Guimaray had a 3-1 lead in a third-set super-tiebreaker at No. 2 singles after he won the first set 6-1 but lost the second 6-0. The other four Bees - Arevalo, Sampaio, Manyonga and Khiyara - had lost the first set and were trailing in the second.

The St. Ambrose women lost three competitive doubles matches.

The top team of Chiara Aguirre Cortez and Julia Turek lost 7-6 (7-1). Hayden Evans and Catherine Meystrik lost 6-3 at No. 2. Jenna Smithmeyer and Paige Owens were defeated 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.

The Bees held leads in three of the six singles matches when the meet was canceled.

Evans led 6-1, 4-4 in her match at No. 3 singles. Meystrik built a 6-4, 1-3 lead at No. 4 singles. And Smithmeyer won her opening set at No. 5 singles 7-5 when play was stopped.

Aguirre Cortez was behind 6-4, 1-1 at No. 1 singles, while the other two Bees lost the first set but built leads in the second. Turek was down 6-3, 2-4 at No. 2 singles and Owens trailed 6-4, 1-2 at No. 6.

SAU will return to conference play with duals at nationally-ranked Holy Cross Saturday.
