SAU walks off with 5-4 win over Judson
Liam Dennehy had a two-out single to score Mike Snow with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 5-4 victory over Judson Friday afternoon in Elgin, Ill.
The Bees, playing as the home team, started the final inning by Andrew Rodriguez drawing a one-out walk. Snow came in to pinch run and immediately stole second and took third on a Judson error. Cole Aughenbaugh was walked, and after a pop up in the infield, Dennehy singled to plate the game winner.
The victory moved SAU to 8-18 overall and 6-8 in the CCAC.
The late run made a winner of Jack Staten, who struck out two in his 1 2/3 innings of relief. He entered in the eighth with runners on second and third with one out and St. Ambrose nursing a 4-3 lead. A squeeze bunt tied the game but Staten pitched out of further trouble and retired the side in order in the top of the ninth.
Five different Bees had multi-hit games, led by Rodriguez, who went 3-for-4 with that walk. Dennehy, Mike Coughlin, Michael Ryan and Noah Powless each had two hits.
Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, it was a Tyler Franc ground out that brought in the first SAU run. An inning later, Ryan and Aughenbaugh had run-scoring singles to give St. Ambrose a 3-2 lead. After the Eagles (12-22, 7-10 CCAC) tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth, the Bees regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on Coughlin's solo home run to left. Judson pushed across its tying run in the eighth before Dennehy's walk-off heroics in the ninth.
Colton Carr pitched the first 7 1/3 innings for the Bees. He allowed eight hits and four runs, two earned, while striking out five.
The two teams will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader in Elgin Saturday afternoon.
