St. Ambrose completes three-game sweep of Judson
Tyler Bromer went the distance and Peyton Minder and Michael Ryan had RBI singles in the seventh inning to lead St. Ambrose to a 4-2 win over Judson in the first game of a doubleheader in Elgin, Ill., Saturday. The Bees completed the sweep with an 8-7 victory in the nightcap, winning all three games in the weekend series.
Bromer allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out four in his seven innings of work.
Cole Aughenbaugh and Noah Powless staked him to an early lead with RBIs in the top of the first inning. Judson answered with a pair of runs in the third and the game remained deadlocked at 2-2 until the seventh.
Tyler Franc started the inning with a single to right and pinch runner Braeden Reed advanced to second on Liam Dennehy's ground out. Minder followed with his tie-breaking single. After a fly out, Ryan added an insurance run with his third hit of the game to plate Minder.
Bromer allowed a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh before inducing a ground ball to end the game.
The Bees pounded out 13 hits, including four home runs, and fought off a late Eagle rally to complete the sweep with an 8-7 win.
Three of those homers came in the first inning. Andrew Rodriguez and Aughenbaugh went back-to-back, then after Powless doubled, Gabe Panza hit a two-run shot, giving the Bees three homers over four hitters and a 4-0 lead.
The extra-base hits continued as Powless had an RBI double in the second and Aughenbaugh and Panza each drove in a run with a double in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-0.
Dennehy answered a Judson run in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot in the top of the fifth to give St. Ambrose an 8-1 lead. Judson (12-24, 7-12 CCAC) scored single runs in the fifth and eighth innings before making things really interesting in the ninth.
The Eagles put together five hits to plate four runs to get within a single run with only one out. Lucas Benda entered with that one out and runners on first and second and promptly got a strikeout. A Bee error nearly proved costly, but Mike Snow threw the potential tying run out at the plate to end the game.
Noah Kesselmayer earned the win with seven strong innings. He struck out six while allowing just two runs. Benda picked up the save.
SAU (10-18, 8-8 CCAC) will next face a three-game series against Indiana South Bend. The two teams are scheduled to play a single game Tuesday before completing the set with a doubleheader Wednesday.
