Back home, Bees drop two to conference-leading Cougars
Finally back home at Modern Woodmen Park for just the second time this season, St. Ambrose lost a doubleheader to CCAC-leading Saint Xavier by scores of 6-0 and 10-2 Wednesday afternoon.
The Bees managed just three hits in the opener. Two of those came in the first inning as Andrew Rodriguez and Cole Aughenbaugh reached on back-to-back two-out singles. Josh Hlubek dropped a two-out single into left center in the fifth inning for the other SAU hit.
Saint Xavier (30-13, 22-4 CCAC) scored three times in the third inning. After a catcher's interference call with two outs, the Cougars followed with three hits to push across the three runs for a 3-0 lead. They tacked three more runs on in the sixth.
Tyler Bromer took the loss. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs over 5 2/3 innings. Casey Hollan struck out one over 1 1/3 innings of relief.
St. Ambrose got a pair of runs in the second game on a couple of two-out Liam Dennehy hits. His single in the second scored Aughenbaugh to tie the game at 1-1. Then, with the Bees trailing 4-1 in the fourth, Dennehy singled to center to score Rodriguez to cut the deficit to 4-2.
But the Cougars immediately answered, scoring once in the fifth, twice in both the sixth and seventh innings, and once more in the eighth to break open a 10-2 lead. SXU scored at least one run in seven straight innings.
James Cormier, the first of five SAU pitchers, took the loss.
Mike Coughlin, Rodriguez and Aughenbaugh had hits in the nightcap.
SAU (13-24, 11-14 CCAC) will next face Calumet St. Joseph in a three-game weekend series. The teams will play a doubleheader in Whiting, Ind., Saturday before completing the series Sunday at Modern Woodmen Park. The final game of the set is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
