The Bees knew they had a tall task ahead of them when they traveled to Fort Wayne, Ind. to take on the 12th-ranked Indiana Tech Warriors. The Bees fought hard, but ultimately dropped all three games to Indiana Tech.
The best chance for the Bees came in the lone game on Friday, which was a tightly contested back-and-forth game. After Indiana Tech took an early one-run lead in the bottom of the first, the Bees retaliated in the third inning. Kyel Alexander smacked a leadoff double to get things started, followed by a Shawn Rigsby walk. A pitch got past the catcher to advance Alexander to third and Rigsby to second. Cole Aughenbaugh hit sacrifice fly to right, and the speedy Alexander capitalized to tie the game at 1-all.
Indiana Tech would regain their one-run lead in the bottom of the fourth, but the Bees would not go away. In the top of the sixth, it was Aughenbaugh's turn to hit a leadoff double. Cooper Huckabone hustled out a ground ball to the pitcher to put runners on first and second with no outs. Brenden Butler hit a sac fly to deep center field to advance both runners to scoring position. A clutch single from Brenden Alsup knocked in Aughenbaugh to tie the game 2-2.
However, the Warriors would punch in two more runs and the Bees couldn't keep up, losing the game 4-2. Jacob Sciame was Friday's starter, throwing 5 innings and only allowing one earned run on four hits. Malcolm Walker came in for relief and pitched the final three innings. Walker also allowed only one earned run on four hits, but was charged with the loss.
St. Ambrose had another great opportunity for a win in the game 1 contest, with the Bees picking up a 5-2 lead at the midway point of the game. Inidiana Tech opened up the scoring with a two-run frame in the bottom of the third. The Bees would respond in the following inning, putting up five quick runs off of some smart baserunning and poor defensive play to create a comfortable three-run lead heading into end of the game.
However, Indiana Tech would respond with a five-run inning of their own in the bottom of the fifth to put them back on top 7-5. Three more runs in the bottom of the sixth would extend their lead 10-5. A last inning rally from the Bees scratched two more runs across, but was not enough to force extra innings, falling 10-7 to the Warriors in game 1.
Adam Deal started game 1 for the Bees, pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on three hits. Casey Hollan would pitch 1 1/3 innings in relief and Collin Rogiers would close out the game on the mound. Hollan was credited with the loss.
Saturday's game 2 matchup started off promising. In the top of the second, Rigsby hit a one-out double to put himself in scoring position. Butler stepped up to the plate and knocked in Rigbsy on a base-hit to give the Bees an early 1-0 lead. Indiana Tech would respond with 14 unanswered runs to put the game away.
Michael Dudek was the game 2 starter for St. Ambrose, giving up six runs in 3 2/3 innings. Dudek was credited for the loss. Jack Golenzer went 1 1/3, allowing only one earned run and one walk. James Hay and Danny Fieweger combined to pitch the last inning. Rigsby went 2-for-3 and scored the lone run for the Bees in the game 2 defeat.
The tough weekend moves the Bees to 5-12 on the year. They will take their home field for the first time this season on Tuesday when they take on the University of St. Francis (Ill.) in a doubleheader matchup.
