SAU takes down RU on Jackie Robinson Day
On April 15th, 1947, Jackie Robinson made his major league debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first black major league baseball player in the modern era. His impact on the game will be cherished forever as baseball players around the world look up to Jackie and what he did for the great game of baseball.
The St. Ambrose Fighting Bees baseball team honored Jackie Robinson Day when they took the field againstRoosevelt in a nine-inning game at Modern Woodmen Park. With a smiling picture of Jackieon the video board in left field, it was a great day to remember a sports hero.
The game got off to a quick start for the Bees, garnering a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, a lead that they wouldn't let go of. Shawn Rigsby set the tone for the Bees with a leadoff double to center field.Liam Dennehy was awarded firstbase after wearing a pitch. Cole Aughenbaugh came up and rocked a double to the gap in left center, scoring Rigsby and putting Dennehy 90 feet away from. Brenden Butler lined out on a well-hit ball to left field, allowing Dennehy to tag up and put the second run on the board for the Bees. Max Rumpf put an exlamation mark on the inning with another double in the gap that scored Aughenbaugh from second.
The Bees would bolster their lead throughout the game. Brenden Alsup punched in Cooper Huckabone on sac fly to go along withMike Coughlin's RBI single to give the Bees two more runs in the third inning.
The Lakers would retaliate with three runs in the top of the fourth, but some stellar relief pitching from James Cormier effectively shut down Roosevelt for the rest of the game. The junior lefty threwfive-innings of shutout baseball, not surrendering any walksand hurling seven strikeouts to lead the Bees to a 7-4 victory.
Aughenbaugh scored a game-high three runs in the win over Roosevelt. Huckabone went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Rumpf went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Cormier picked up the win for his efforts, improving his record to 4-0 innine appearances this season. Conor OHara was the starter for the Fighting Bees. OHara pitcheda solid four innings and collectedtwo strikeouts.
Wednesday's action was to begin with the completion of the suspended game from March 17. However, an official ruling declared the game complete. Therefore, the Bees were credited with a 3-0 win that was implemented into their record retroactively, which means the Bees were 16-15 overall and 12-2 in the CCAC prior to Wednesday's game.
After picking up the win, the Bees now improve to 17-15 overall and 13-2 in conference play, the best record in the CCAC. The Bees will hit the road next to take on conference rival Olivet Nazarene in a nine-inning matchup on April 16.
