St. Ambrose scored double-digit runs in both games against Trinity Christian on Tuesday, sweeping the doubleheader and completing the season sweep over the trolls in 2021.
The Bees chalked up 19 runs over seven innings in game 1 of the doubleaheader.
St. Ambrose handed the ball to sophomore righty Adam Deal to start the first game, his eighth start of the year. Deal didn't have much to worry about, however, with his squad putting up four runs in the opening frame. Shawn Rigsby and Liam Dennehy opened up the game with back-to-back singles, followed by a Cole Aughenbaugh walk to load the bases. Brenden Butler plated them all with a monster grand slam to give the Bees an early four-run lead.
Trinity Christian (12-25, 7-15 CCAC) responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first, but the Bees put up five runs in both the second and fourth innings to put the game well out of reach.
St. Ambrose ended the first game of the doubleheader with 15 hits, scoring runs in five of the seven innings. Mike Snow recorded a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate and roped in three RBIs, Butler tallied a game-high six RBIs on 2-for-3 hitting, and Rigsby went 3-for-5 with five more RBIs to help lead the Bees to a game 1 victory.
Deal was not able to pick up the win, only going 3 2/3 as the starter. Danny Fieweger came in to relieve Deal in the top of the fourth when the Trinity Christian bats started to heat up, and Fieweger was able to punch out the Troll batter to get the Bees out of the jam. Collin Rogiers pitched the final inning and was able to keep the Trolls at bay to secure the win for the Bees. Fieweger was credited with the win in game 1, his first win of the season.
The second game of the doubleheader was more of the same for the Fighting Bees.
St. Ambrose looked to another sophomore right-hander in game 2, with Michael Dudek getting the nod in his ninth start of the season. Similar to Deal, Dudek got a load of run support early from the Fighting Bees' bats, with Dennehy launching his fifth home run of the season and Max Rumpf punching in two runs on a base hit to give the Bees an early 3-0 in the top of the first.
The Bees weren't done yet, with Cooper Huckabone blasting a three-run shot in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bees a 10-3 lead late in the game. Huckabone leads the team with seven homers this season.
Reliever Nick Hernandez came in to pitch the final four innings of the game, limiting the Trolls to three runs scored. Hernandez and the Bees held on to win game 2 with a final score of 10-6 and secure the season sweep of Trinity Christian. Hernandez was credited with the win, improving his record to 4-1 on the year.
St. Ambrose, now 24-18 overall and 20-5 in the conference, retains its sole possesion of the number one spot in the CCAC standings. On a quick turnaround, the Bees will face Lincoln in a doubleheader on April 28 at Modern Woodmen Park in Davenport, Iowa.
