Bees take down Trojans, earn second seed in CCAC tournament

St. Ambrose hit the road to take on Trinity International in their final game of the regular season.

After spotting the Trojans a three-run lead in the opening frame, the Fighting Bees slowly but surely chipped away at the gap.

Adrian Zietara got the Bees on the board in the third with an RBI groundout that plated Mike Snow. Snow would later cut the lead to one, using his speed to wheel home on a passed ball in the top of the fifth.

This opened the floodgates for St. Ambrose, scoring two more runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. Shawn Rigsby lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to easily score speedster Tryeece Morgan. Cooper Huckabone would mirror Rigsby with a sacrifice fly of his own to plate Zietara.

Zietara added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, stealing third and then coming home on an error by the Trojan third baseman. This run proved to be game-winner, with TIU scoring a run in the final frame.

Nick Vollmert went five innings on the hill as the Fighting Bees' starter, scattering six hits on three earned runs while twirling three strikeouts. Hayden Kingsbury pitched the final four in relief, tacking down the 5-4 with four strikeouts.

The Fighting Bees finish the season with an overall record of 31-12 and 22-8 in the CCAC. The Bees ended in a threeway tie for second in the conference standings with Saint X and St. Francis (Ill.) but own the tiebreaker over both squads, claiming the two-seed in the CCAC tournament for the second-straight year.

The conference tournament begins Thursday at DuPage Medical Group Field in Joliet, Ill. St. Ambrose will take on the seventh-seeded Calumet Crimson Wave in the opening round. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
