St. Ambrose drops two at Mount Mercy
Mount Mercy scratched out single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to escape with a 4-3 win over St. Ambrose in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The Mustangs completed the sweep with a 10-5 win in the second game.
The Bees built two separate leads in the opener. First, SAU grabbed a 2-0 lead behind a sacrifice fly from Joey Fitzgerald Jr. that scored Caden Thode and an RBI single from Brandon Roth that plated Jake Pauley.
After Mount Mercy drew even at 2-2 with runs in the third and fourth innings, St. Ambrose retook the lead on a Brandon Matias solo home run to left-center in the sixth.
But the Bee bullpen couldn't hold on. The Mustangs were credited with a steal of home to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, and after the Bees left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, they plated the walk-off game-winner in the bottom half of the seventh on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.
Jeremy Conforti collected three of SAU's eight hits. Roth, Matias, Pauley, Thode and Daniel Laughery had the other hits.
Brad Niedzwiedz took the loss after an inning of relief. Sergio Marchizza started and worked two innings before Carson Johnson pitched 3 2/3 innings.
MMU jumped to a 10-0 lead after four innings in the second game. SAU got all five of its runs in the seventh. Pauley drove in a run on a ground out before Noah Chase ripped a three-run home run to account for the final score.
Pauley, Conforti, Quinn Flanagan and Bryce Vorwald also had hits in the loss.
Joe Evans was charged with the loss. Michael Betancourt and Danny Molony pitched in relief.
St. Ambrose, now 3-7 overall, will open CCAC play Friday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, against Saint Xavier.
