Bats come to life as SAU takes two at Saint Xavier

St. Ambrose scored 28 total runs to sweep a doubleheader at Saint Xavier by scores of 13-4 and 15-5 Sunday in Chicago.

Thirteen of the Bees' 24 hits came in the opener, with three of those coming off the bat of Jake Pauley. Pauley finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Joey Fitzgerald Jr., Brandon Roth and Kevin Niedzwiedz each had two hits in the first game.

Jeremy Conforti, Fitzgerald and Brandon Matias each drove in a run as part of a three-run first inning. Fitzgerald, Matias and Niedzwiedz knocked in runs as part of a six-run fourth inning that opened a 10-1 lead.

Pauley collected a two-run double in the sixth to pad the lead.

Conforti, Bryce Vorwald, Noah Chase and Quinn Flanagan also finished with a hit.

It was more than enough offensive support for Brad Niedzwiedz, who went the distance, striking out six over the seven innings.

Four Bees combined to strike out seven Cougars in the second game.

Carson Johnson started and worked the first two innings. Nathaniel Johnson earned the win with two innings in relief. Sergio Marchizza and Joe Evans combined to throw the final three innings.

St. Ambrose (5-9, 2-2 CCAC) trailed 2-0 after one inning and 3-1 on a Brandon Roth home run after two.

Filip Milatovic had a two-run single as part of a seven-run third inning that changed momentum. Pauley, Fitzgerald, Matias and Roth also had RBIs in the frame that put SAU in front 8-3.

Saint Xavier got within 8-5 but Fitzgerald had a twp-run single and later scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to push the lead to 11-5. An inning later, Conforti brought in Daniel Laughery with a single before Fitzgerald ripped a three-run homer to center to complete the scoring.

Milatovic was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Fitzgerald had two hits, scored three runs and drove in six. Pauley also had two hits.

The Bees will start a four-game series with Olivet Nazarene with a doubleheader in Bourbonnais, Ill., Friday.
