SAU salvages final game in four-game set with ONU
St. Ambrose built an 8-2 lead and hung on for a 10-8 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Olivet Nazarene Friday afternoon. The Tigers took the opener 6-5 and ultimately won the series 3-1.
Bryce Vorwald and Quinn Flanagan each had four hits to help the Bees salvage the final game of the set. Jeremy Conforti finished with three hits, and Filip Milatovic, Sam Wampler and Daniel Laughery each had two. Caden Thode also singled as part of an 18-hit attack.
Conforti launched a pair of solo home runs, the first one following Joey Fitzgerald Jr.'s sacrifice fly in the first inning, to give SAU a 2-0 lead. His second shot pushed the lead to 10-5 in the eighth.
Wampler also homered. His solo shot closed out a three-run third inning that gave the Bees a 7-2 lead.
After Olivet Nazarene tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first, Vorwald broke the tie with a two-run single in the second. Milatovic had an RBI and another run scored on a double-play ball before Wampler's home run.
Laughery's run-scoring single in the fifth gave St. Ambrose (6-12, 3-5 CCAC) the 8-2 lead.
ONU got one run back in the bottom of the fifth before Laughery doubled to score Flanagan for a 9-3 lead in the seventh. The Tigers pushed across two runs in the bottom of the frame before Conforti's second blast in the eighth.
Olivet Nazarene scored once in the eighth and added two in the ninth. The Tigers had the potential tying run on base but Parker Ruth got his fourth strikeout to close out the win.
Noah Chase was credited with the win after striking out five over four innings. He allowed two earned runs. Aaron Vertuno and Danny Molony each worked a single inning before Ruth went the final three to earn the save.
The win came after the Bees were unable to hold on to a pair of leads in the first game Friday.
Jake Pauley and Conforti had RBI singles in the first to give St. Ambrose a fast 2-0 lead. ONU came back with a run in the both the second and third innings and put up two in the fourth to grab a 4-2 lead.
Pauley and Fitzgerald put the Bees back in front in the fifth. Pauley singled in Laughery and Fitzgerald followed with a two-run single to score both Vorwald and Pauley for a 5-4 SAU lead.
That lead didn't last long. A two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth put the Tigers back in front and they closed it out from there.
Pauley finished 3-for-4 while Milatovic collected two hits.
Brad Niedzwiedz was charged with the loss after working 4 1/3 innings. Garrett Vincent pitched the final 1 2/3 innings.
St. Ambrose will visit St. Francis Tuesday.
