Pitching powers Bees past Titans
After tossing shutouts last time out, Brad Niedzwiedz and Joe Turek were nearly as dominant Thursday. The duo pitched St. Ambrose to 5-2 and 4-1 wins at Indiana South Bend in the first two of a four-game set. The victories extended SAU's winning streak to five games.
Niedzwiedz went the distance in the opener, allowing eight hits and two earned runs over the seven innings. He struck out four.
Turek then followed by going 6 2/3 innings, surrending just four hits and one run. He struck out three. Turek gave way to Hayden Kingsbury, who collected three strikeouts over the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up the save.
The Bee offense managed only three total hits in the first game, but thanks to seven walks, was able to put up five runs.
Daniel Laughery got SAU on the board in the third. He led off with a double and took second on a sacrifice from Kevin Niedzwiedz. A Bryce Vorwald ground out plated Laughery.
After IU South Bend went ahead 2-1, St. Ambrose struck back with a four-run sixth on the benefit of just one hit. With two outs, Brandon Roth walked, Filip Milatovic was hit by a pitch and Laughery walked to load the bases. Consecutive bases-loaded walks to Kevin Niedzwiedz and Vorwald pushed the Bees in front 3-2. Quinn Flanagan then followed with a two-run single to pad the lead, which was more than enough support for Brad Niedzwiedz.
Brandon Matias had the other SAU hit, a single in the second inning.
The sixth inning also was the difference-maker in the second game.
In a scoreless tie, the Bees put up three runs. Vorwald got things started by reaching on an error and then stealing second. After Flanagan was hit by a pitch, Jeremy Conforti bunted both runners into scoring position. Joey Fitzgerald Jr. and Roth followed with RBI hits before a Milatovic sacrifice fly brought in Fitzgerald for a 3-0 lead.
The Tians got a run back in the bottom of the sixth but Conforti brought in an insurance run when his two-out, ninth-inning single plated Laughery for a 4-1 advantage.
Roth finished with two hits in Thursday's finale.
St. Ambrose, now 16-15 overall and 13-7 in the CCAC, will complete the four-game series at IUSB with a doubleheader Friday.
