Winning streak hits seven as SAU sweeps IUSB

St. Ambrose ran its winning streak to seven games by taking a doubleheader at Indiana South Bend Friday by scores of 8-4 and 9-7. It completed a two-day, four-game sweep for SAU.

The Bees scored all eight of their runs over the final three innings, including a five-run outburst in the sixth, to win the opener 8-4.

Brandon Matias homered twice, a two-run blast in the sixth and a solo shot an inning later.

It was Joey Fitzgerald Jr. who got St. Ambrose on the board. With the Bees trailing 2-0 after a two-run IU South Bend home run in the opening inning, Fitzgerald cut the deficit in half with an RBI single in the fifth that scored Kevin Niedzwiedz.

The Titans answered with two runs in their half of the fifth to extend their lead to 4-1.

But in the top of the sixth, SAU answered. Matias ripped his two-run homer that scored Ethan McCombs to pull the Bees to within a run. Quinn Flanagan followed with a single that plated both Bryce Vorwald and Daniel Laughery to put St. Ambrose in front 5-4. Brandon Roth was later hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Flanagan for a 6-4 lead.

Matias gave the team some breathing room with his second home run of the day coming in the seventh. Vorwald had a sacrifice fly later in the seventh to add an additional insurance run.

Flanagan finished 3-for-5 while Laughery matched Matias with a pair of hits.

Justin Lane earned the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief work. Carson Johnson struck out six over the first four innings before David Biedron, Lane and Parker Ruth closed things out from the bullpen.

The offense put up runs in seven of the nine innings in the 9-7 victory to complete the sweep.

Jeremy Conforti had a solo home run in the first inning. Laughery, Fitzgerald, Vorwald and Filip Milatovic each had an RBI over the next four innings. Despite the early runs, the Bees trailed 7-5 after five.

But in the seventh, St. Ambrose took advantage of three walks and an error to score three times while collecting just one hit. That hit came off the bat of Matias, who singled to start the frame. Fitzgerald reached on an error. Then Roth, Milatovic and McCombs drew consecutive walks, the last two forcing in runs. One out later, Vorwald lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score another run for an 8-7 lead.

Matias doubled in Conforti to end the scoring in the eighth.

Matias finished 4-for-6 while Conforti and Fitzgerland each picked up two hits.

Noah Chase picked up the victory. He allowed just two hits and no runs over 3 1/3 innings of relief work. Jacob Bosse struck out eight over the first 4 1/3 innings. Michael Betancourt and Nathaniel Johnson pitched before Ruth got the save by striking out two while recording the final four outs.

The Bees will host St. Francis Tuesday at NelsonCorp Field in Clinton, Iowa.
