Winning streak snapped by Fighting Saints
St. Ambrose saw its seven-game winning streak snapped as its home struggles continued. The Bees dropped to 1-5 in home games in Clinton, Iowa, after dropping a doubleheader to St. Francis by scores of 7-4 and 9-2 Tuesday afternoon.
The losses also saw SAU lose its grasp on the conference lead.
It was a pair of big innings that doomed the Bees Tuesday.
A five-run second was the difference in the opener. After retiring the first batter of the inning, a hit batsman and a walk followed. Three hits later, SAU trailed 5-0.
St. Ambrose chipped away with Ethan McCombs singling in Brandon Roth in the bottom of the second and Filip Milatovic bringing in Joey Fitzgerald Jr. with a single of his own in the fourth.
St. Francis got both runs back in the fifth. An error on a Jeremy Conforti ground ball in the seventh allowed Kevin Niedzwiedz and Bryce Vorwald to both score to account for the final two runs.
Fitzgerald and Milatovic each finished with two of SAU's eight hits. Vorwald, Niedzwiedz and Brandon Matias had the other Bee hits.
Justin Lane was changed with the loss after working 4 2/3 innings. Garrett Vincent did not allow a run over the final 2 1/3 innings.
Conforti and McCombs had RBI hits in the third and fourth innings, respectively, to help St. Ambrose to a 2-2 tie in the second game.
But four hits and a walk helped the Saints push across four runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead for good. USF added a single run in the eighth and two more in the ninth.
Vorwald and Roth each had two hits in the series finale. Fitzgerald and Milatovic also had hits.
Hayden Kingsbury took the loss in relief of Sergio Marchizza. Marchizza struck out three and did not allow an earned run over the first five innings. Joe Evans pitched the final three frames.
St. Ambrose (18-17, 15-9 CCAC) will return to NelsonCorp Field in Clinton, Iowa, to host Judson Friday.
