Offense erupts to help SAU get split at Judson
St. Ambrose exploded for 13 hits leading to 13 runs in a 13-1 win at Judson in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday. The Eagles bounced back to get the second game 15-5 to win the four-game series.
The Bees put up multiple runs in three different innings in the opener.
Joey Fitzgerald Jr. got the scoring started with a grand slam in the top of the first. It was SAU's first hit of the game as Bryce Vorwald led off with a walk, Jake Pauley was hit by a pitch and Brandon Matias reached on an error.
In the fourth, Caden Thode doubled in both Brandon Roth and Quinn Flanagan. Pauley then knocked Thode in with a single to push the lead to 7-0.
An inning later, the Bees added five more runs. Filip Milatovic had an RBI single. Thode walked with the bases loaded to bring in Ethan McCombs. Vorwald hit a sacrifice fly to right. Pauley ended the inning with a double that scored Flanagan and Thode.
After Judson got a run in the sixth, Aaron Vertuno brought in Vorwald on a ground out in the seventh to end the scoring.
Fitzgerald, Pauley, Milatovic and Roth each had two hits. McCombs, Matias, Flanagan, Thode and Jeremy Conforti had one each.
Jacob Bosse picked up the win after allowing just three hits and one run over six innings. He struck out six. Joey Evans pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
The offense was quiet in the second game. St. Ambrose had just one hit through the first six innings as Judson built a 9-0 lead.
The Bees finally broke through in the seventh. Milatovic ripped a two-run home run to get SAU on the board. Kevin Niedzwiedz had an RBI single before Conforti doubled in a pair.
But any comeback hopes were quickly squashed as the Eagles put up four runs in the bottom of the seventh before ending the game in the eighth with two more runs.
Carson Johnson, the first of five St. Ambrose pitchers, was tagged with the loss. He was followed by Garrett Vincent, Noah Chase, Nathaniel Johnson and David Biedron.
The Bees, now 19-20 overall and 16-12 in CCAC play, will take a break from conference action by playing at Western Illinois Tuesday.
