SAU gets win No. 20 by taking down Grand View
St. Ambrose reached the 20-win plateau by handing Grand View just its seventh loss of the season in a 10-8 victory at Modern Woodmen Park Wednesday.
The Vikings won the first game of the doubleheader 1-0.
SAU jumped on GVU right away, plating three runs in the first inning. A Noah Chase double plated Daniel Laughery and Jeremy Conforti before Chase scored on a wild pitch.
An inning later, the Bees doubled their advantage. Jake Pauley and Laughery delivered RBI hits before Conforti lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Pauley for a 6-0 lead.
After giving the lead away in the third as the Vikings scored six times, the Bees came back in the bottom of the inning. Bryce Vorwald and Pauley had run-scoring hits to put St. Ambrose back in front. And in the fourth, Sam Wampler singled to bring in Joey Fitzgerald Jr. Later in the frame, Brandon Roth stole second, and when the catcher's throw slid into the outfield, Quinn Flanagan came in to score for a 10-6 lead.
Garrett Vincent, who entered in the third inning, picked up the win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He allowed just two hits. He gave way to Parker Ruth, who earned a six-out save. Ruth allowed a pair of unearned runs in the seventh before closing out the 10-8 win.
Joe Turek started and surrendered a single hit over two scoreless innings. Carson Johnson took over in the third.
Seven different Bees had hits, led by Pauley's two hits. Fitzgerald and Flanagan also had hits.
SAU wasted strong pitching performances from Jacob Bosse and Justin Lane in the opener.
Bosse struck out five while allowing just three hits over five innings. An unearned run in the third proved to be the difference. Lane recorded two strikeouts and gave up a single hit over the final two frames.
But the St. Ambrose offense managed just three total hits. Laughery singled leading off the first and again with one out in the sixth. Filip Milatovic had a two-out single in the seventh.
St. Ambrose, now 20-22 overall, will visit Clarke Tuesday.
