SAU falls to NCAA D-I Western Illinois

St. Ambrose lost at NCAA Division I Western Illinois Tuesday afternoon by a score of 12-3.

The Bees struck first, scoring in the top of the first inning. Quinn Flanagan drew a one-out walk and one out later, stole second. Filip Milatovic came through with a big two-out hit to give SAU a 1-0 lead.

Western Illinois (3-4) took the lead for good in the second, plating a pair of runs. The Leathernecks added two more in the third before breaking things open with a five-run fourth.

St. Ambrose (3-5) pushed across two runs in the sixth. Michael Rago walked and Jake Pauley was hit by a pitch. Flanagan sacrificed both runners up a base. Mason Heitzler's infield single brought in Rago and Milatovic followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Pauley.

WIU tacked on three runs in the bottom of the seventh to account for the final score.

Bryce Vorwald collected two of the Bees' seven hits. Pauley, Heitzler, Milatovic Rago and Michael Stupavsky had the other hits.

Michael Moise took the loss after allowing two runs, only one earned over the innings. He was followed in order by Matt Donovan, Nathaniel Johnson, Aidan Pieniazek, Jack Kerpan and Aidan Stratton.

SAU will head to McKenzie, Tenn., to play a four-game series at Bethel Friday and Saturday.
