Offensive explosion gets SAU series win over SXU

After pitching was the major story Saturday, it was the hitters' turn Sunday.

The Bees, who swept a doubleheader Saturday by scores of 5-4 and 4-1, earned a series victory over Saint Xavier by splitting a doubleheader in Chicago, Ill., Sunday.

The Cougars won the first game 22-10 before the Bees bounced back for a 21-9 win in the series finale.

The Bees pounded out 16 hits and scored multiple runs in four different innings in the last game.

Five of those runs came in the first inning, the big shot was a three-run Bryce Vorwald home run, and 10 more runs came in the third. SAU then tacked on three runs in both the fourth and seventh innings.

Five Bees accounted for all 16 hits. Vorwald went 4-for-6 with six RBIs and three runs scored. Michael Rago was 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs.

Aaron Vertuno (three RBIs, three runs) and Filip Milatovic (two RBIs) each had three hits. Quinn Flanagan had two hits along with three RBIs and four runs.

Mason Heitzler and Matthew McBrien scored three runs apiece and Michael Stupavsky scored twice. Jake Pauley finished with an RBI and a run scored.

Noah Chase picked up the win by going four innings before Matt Donovan and Aidan Stratton combined to pitch the final three.

SAU also got off to a fast start in the first game, putting up four runs in the first inning. Milatovic had an RBI double before Vorwald ripped a three-run double.

But SXU used four hits, including two homers, and four walks to push across 10 runs in the bottom of the first to go in front 10-4.

The Bees got to within 13-9 but the Cougars exploded for nine more runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain control.

Vorwald had three hits and drove in three in the loss. Flanagan and Milatovic collected two hits each.

David Biedron was charged with the loss. Aidan Pieniazek, Caden Schwenker and Ian McGhiey all pitched in relief.

St. Ambrose (8-8, 3-1 CCAC) will play a single game at Mount Mercy Tuesday.
