Guzman pitches Bees to doubleheader split with Tigers

Dominic Guzman struck out 11 and allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings to power St. Ambrose to a 2-0 win over Olivet Nazarene in the second game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Duane Banks Field in Iowa City, Iowa.

The senior righthander improved to 4-1 on the year. He has not allowed a run over his last 16 innings.

The Bees got the only run they would need in the second. Bryce Vorwald was hit by a pitch and moved to second on Matthew McBrien's ground out. Mason Heitzler came through with a two-out single to right to put SAU on the board.

St. Ambrose (9-10, 4-2 CCAC) added an insurance run in the fourth. Peter Mitchell, who had one of SAU's three hits in the game, reached on an error before Vorwald tripled into right-center to push the lead to 2-0.

Guzman stranded single runners in the first and fourth innings and left a pair on in the fifth. He retired the side in order in the sixth before giving way to Aidan Stratton. Stratton worked around a one-out single to pick up his second save.

The win came after the Bees let the opener slip away in a 9-4 loss.

SAU built a 3-0 lead in the fourth, all started after Michael Rago reached on a two-out error. Jake Pauley ripped a ground-rule double to right to put two in scoring position. Quinn Flanagan doubled to left-center to bring in the two, and Filip Milatovic followed with a double of his own to left to plate Flanagan.

Olivet Nazarene (6-14, 2-4 CCAC) scored twice in the fifth, but in the sixth, Milatovic doubled in Flanagan for a 4-2 lead.

With a strong win blowing out to right, the Tigers took advantage of the conditions with a game-tying two-run homer to right in the seventh. ONU broke the tie with a solo home run to right-center an inning later. Then in the ninth, a Bee error led to four unearned runs as Olivet Nazarene broke things open.

Pauley, Flanagan, Milatovic and Mitchell each collected two hits.

Michael Moise took the loss despite allowing just one earned run over three innings. He struck out four. Moise entered in relief of Connor Bird, who struck out five while surrendering four runs over six innings.

The teams were scheduled to complete their four-game series Saturday, but that doubleheader has been postponed. No makeup date has been determined.
