Bees score 28 runs to take opening doubleheader from V-Hawks
A seven-run inning in the first game and a nine-run frame in the second game helped St. Ambrose sweep a doubleheader from Viterbo by scores of 12-2 and 16-1 Friday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park.
Matthew McBrien went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run and three RBIs in the opener. Mason Nauman also went deep, launching a three-run homer as part of the seven-run fourth.
The big inning came after Viterbo closed to within 3-2 in the top of the inning.
In the bottom half, the Bees sent 13 hitters to the plate. They managed only three hits - the homer from Nauman, a single from McBrien and a double from Mason Heitzler. But SAU took advantage of five walks, a hit batsman and two V-Hawk errors to score seven times. Eric Gonzalez also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the frame that helped open a 10-2 lead.
McBrien hit his two-run blast in the fifth to end the scoring.
Jake Pauley, Quinn Flanagan, Filip Milatovic and Bryce Vorwald also had hits.
Connor Bird picked up the complete-game win, working all seven innings and striking out seven.
The second game was decided early as the Bees crossed home plate nine times in the bottom of the first.
The Bees again sent 13 hitters to the plate, collecting six hits, two walks, and a hit batter, and again capitalizing on a V-Hawk error.
Milatovic collected two run-scoring doubles, bringing in four runs, in two at-bats in the first. Vorwald, Heitzler, Gonzalez and Pauley also had RBIs in the inning.
Michael Rago and Flanagan each brought in a run in the second to extend the lead to 11-0.
St. Ambrose (15-12, 10-4 CCAC) scored five more times in the third. Heitzler, Gonzalez, Pauley, Flanagan and Milatovic had the RBIs to push the advantage to 16-0.
Viterbo avoided the shutout with a lone run in the seventh.
Vorwald finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Milatovic finished with three hits and five RBIs. Gonzalez and Pauley each had two hits and combined for five RBIs and two runs.
Flanagan, Nauman, McBrien, Rago, Peter Mitchell and Michael Stupavsky also had hits.
Dominic Guzman cruised through four scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out four. Ian McGhiey got the three-inning save.
The two teams will complete their four-game series with another doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park Saturday.
