Opportunistic Bees complete sweep of Viterbo

St. Ambrose completed a four-game series sweep of Viterbo by taking Saturday's doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park by scores of 9-5 and 7-2.

The Bees rallied for a 5-2 deficit in the opener thanks to a four-run seventh inning. After Viterbo (4-20, 3-12 CCAC) broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh, St. Ambrose (17-12, 12-4 CCAC) came right back.

Filip Milatovic doubled in Jake Pauley. Mason Nauman followed with an RBI single. Bryce Vorwald's bunt allowed Danny Mouw to score. Matthew McBrien finished the big inning with a single to plate Nauman.

SAU created some breathing room an inning later. Eric Gonzalez, Michael Rago and Jake Pauley hit consecutive doubles to start the eighth. Quinn Flanagan lifted a sacrifice fly to right before Nauman singled in Pauley to extend the lead to 9-5.

Jack Kerpan struck out four over the final two innings to pick up the save. He was the fourth Bee pitcher of the game. David Biedron did not allow an earned run over the first four innings. Aidan Pieniazek worked two innings before Michael Moise got the win by throwing the seventh.

Milatovic finished with three hits while Pauley, Nauman and Gonzalez had two each. Flanagan, McBrien, Rago and Mason Heitzler also collected hits.

St. Ambrose got off to a fast start and that allowed Brandon Cusack to cruise to victory.

After giving up a run in the top of the first, the Bees scored four times in the bottom of the inning courtesy of a Flanagan infield single, a Vorwald bases-loaded walk and three Viterbo errors.

Cusack was in control from there. He went the first six innings, allowing just five hits and the one run. He struck out seven.

Milatovic, McBrien and Heitzler had RBI hits in the fifth for a 7-1 lead.

Aidan Stratton struck out two in the seventh to close out the sweep.

Flanagan went 3-for-3 in the finale.

SAU will visit St. Francis Tuesday.
