St. Ambrose controls first game in split with St. Francis

Four different Bees had three hits and Dominic Guzman and Michael Moise combined for 11 strikeouts to help St. Ambrose to an 18-3 win in the first game of a doubleheader at St. Francis Monday afternoon.

The Saints came back to win the second game 9-2.

SAU scored a run in six innings, and put up multiple runs in five of those frames, in the opener.

Jake Pauley hit a two-run home run as part of a four-run seventh inning and Bryce Vorwald's grand slam capped a seven-run ninth inning.

Pauley, Vorwald, Matthew McBrien and Michael Rago each collected three hits, and the four combined for 11 runs scored and 11 RBIs. Pauley and Vorwald drove in four apiece. McBrien scored four times.

Filip Milatovic had two hits and two RBIs, and Luke Brabham, Mason Nauman and Eric Gonzalez each had one hit.

Mason Heitzler knocked in a pair of runs. Danny Mouw scored twice and Quinn Flanagan added one run.

St. Ambrose (18-13, 13-5 CCAC) scored the game's first seven runs and exploded for 11 runs over the final three frames.

Guzman struck out nine while allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. Moise punched out a pair over the final 3 1/3 to get the save.

St. Francis (12-20, 9-9 CCAC) turned the tables on SAU in the second game by building a 7-1 lead after three innings. Peter Mitchell's sacrifice fly scoring Mouw accounted for the early Bee run.

Flanagan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to close the gap to 7-2 before USF tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth to end the scoring.

Mitchell, Gonzalez and Michael Stupavsky had SAU's three hits.

David Biedron was charged with the loss. Noah Chase and Matt Donovan combined to throw 4 2/3 innings in relief.

St. Ambrose is scheduled to host Indiana South Bend Friday and Saturday at Modern Woodmen Park.
