St. Ambrose and Judson split four-game set

Noah Chase and Aidan Stratton combined to allow four hits and one run over 5 2/3 innings of relief to allow St. Ambrose to rally for an 11-8 win in the first game of a doubleheader with Judson Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles bounced back to claim the second game 6-3 as the teams split their four-game series.

Playing at the Plaster Athletic Complex in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the team's fifth home site of the season, the Bees led 3-0 early before falling behind 8-4 entering the bottom of the fifth.

But SAU scored the game's final seven runs, including five over the seventh and eighth innings.

Michael Stupavsky ripped a double down the left-field line to score Quinn Flanagan to cut the deficit to 8-7 in the seventh. Bryce Vorwald then singled to bring in Stupavsky to tie the game.

An inning later, Filip Milatovic lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Michael Rago to give the Bee the lead. Stupavsky added some breathing room with a double that plated both Jake Pauley and Quinn Flanagan for an 11-8 lead.

After Chase, who allowed four hits and one run over 4 2/3 innings, gave up a double to start the ninth, Stratton came in and retired the three batters he faced to earn his fifth save. Chase picked up the win.

It was a Matthew McBrien bases-loaded double that gave St. Ambrose (25-16, 20-8 CCAC) a 3-0 lead in the first. Judson came up with six runs in the third and extended the lead to 7-3 in the fourth.

Eric Gonzalez homered in the fourth before the Eagles hit a solo shot in the fifth for the 8-4 lead. Milatovic had an RBI double in the fifth and Rago an RBI single in the sixth to get the Bees closer.

McBrien finished 3-for-4 while Flanagan, Milatovic, Stupavsky and Bryce Vorwald each had two hits. Pauley, Gonzalez, Rago and Mason Heitzler also had hits.

Brandon Cusack started and went 3 1/3 innings.

After collecting 15 hits in the opener, SAU managed just four in the series finale.

After Judson took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third, St. Ambrose got two runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to an Eagle error.

Judson scored three more in the fourth. The final SAU run came courtesy of a Peter Mitchell pinch-hit RBI double to bring in McBrien. Milatovic, Stupavsky and Mason Nauman had the other three hits.

Aidan Pieniazek took the loss. Ian McGhiey struck out five while giving up only three hits over 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief work.

The Bees will step out of conference play to visit Clarke for a single game Wednesday.
