Senior Day spoiled by losses to Wildcats
Taking a break from conference play, St. Ambrose dropped a doubleheader to Culver-Stockton 11-10 in 10 innings and 11-5 on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park.
On a day they recognized their seniors, the Bees struggled to get much going.
Dominic Guzman struck out 11 over 6 1/3 innings but didn't get a decision after Culver-Stockton scored three times in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4.
Both offenses came to life in the ninth. First, the Wildcats put up four runs. Then in the bottom half, the Bees loaded the bases and Filip Milatovic brought them all in with a double to left-center. Michael Stupavsky followed with a single that scored courtesy-runner Danny Mouw to force extra innings.
A three-run home run gave C-SC an 11-8 lead but SAU came right back. Michael Rago's single scored Mason Heitzler and Milatovic later doubled to score Rago to cut the deficit to 11-10.
With runners on second and third with two outs, Quinn Flanagan tried to score from third on a wild pitch, but he was called out on a close play at the plate.
Milatovic and Heitzler each finished with three hits. Flanagan, Stupavsky and Rago had two each. Matthew McBrien had the team's other hit.
Michael Moise, Aidan Stratton and Noah Chase followed Guzman on the mound. Stratton was charged with the loss.
Culver-Stockton carried that momentum into the second game, scoring three runs in the top of the first. After Jake Pauley walked with the bases loaded to score Bryce Vorwald to get the Bees on the board, the Wildcats broke things open with a seven-run fourth inning.
Rago launched a two-run home to left in the fourth inning. Aaron Vertuno and Vorwald had RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.
Vertuno finished with two of SAU's eight hits. Rago, Flanagan, Milatovic, Vorwald, Luke Brabham and Mason Nauman had the others.
Connor Bird took the loss. Aidan Pieniazek and Matt Donovan pitched in relief.
Between games, the Bees recognized their seniors - Luke Brabham, Noah Chase, Quinn Flanagan, Eric Gonzalez, Dominic Guzman, Filip Milatovic, Michael Moise, Mason Nauman, Jake Pauley, Michael Rago, Aaron Vertuno, Bryce Vorwald and Sam Wampler.
St. Ambrose (25-18) will play a four-game series with Calumet Friday and Saturday.
