SAU gets important sweep of Calumet
Needing a four-game sweep to win the outright CCAC regular-season title, St. Ambrose got off to a good start by winning Saturday's doubleheader at Calumet by scores of 11-0 and 5-3.
The wins came behind two strong pitching efforts.
Dominic Guzman set the tone early with a dominant performance in the opener.
The senior right-hander went the distance, striking out 13 and allowing just one hit in a complete-game shutout. Guzman threw just 83 pitches.
He retired the first nine hitters he faced before surrendering a leadoff single in the fourth. Guzman went back to work, not allowing another base runner. That included a stretch of six straight strikeouts spanning the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Michael Stupavsky supplied all the offense the Bees would need with a three-run home run in the top of the first.
St. Ambrose (27-19, 22-8 CCAC) completely broke things open in the third with an 11-run inning.
Matthew McBrien, Michael Rago, Quinn Flanagan, Filip Milatovic, Stupavsky and Bryce Vorwald each drove in a run in the frame.
McBrien finished 3-for-3 while Stupavsky and Vorwald each had two hits. Milatovic and Eric Gonzalez also had hits.
Then SAU turned to Aidan Pieniazek for the second game.
The junior right-hander struck out 10 over six innings while allowing just one run.
Pieniazek was locked in a scoreless tie until the Bees broke through in the sixth.
Stupavsky, Vorwald and Peter Mitchell drew consecutive one-out walks before Rago singled in a pair. With two outs, Heitzler then ripped a three-run homer to extend the lead to 5-0.
Calumet got on the board with a single run in the bottom of the sixth and added two more in the seventh. The Crimson Wave had the potential tying runs on base before Aidan Stratton got a ground ball to end the game.
Heitzler had two of SAU's six hits. Rago, Vorwald, Flanagan and Jake Pauley had the others. The Bees also drew seven walks.
The two teams will wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader in Whiting, Ind., Sunday.
