Bowlers compete at Tier-1 Kegel Classic

This past weekend saw men's and women's varsity bowling squads compete at the Kegel Classic in Addison, Illinois. One of the premier events each season, the men's field attracted 68 teams, while the women's field was comprised of 55 teams.

The men's team got off to a slow Saturday start, but a solid final game lifted the men to 9th place heading into Sunday's baker competition. There, they averaged more than 215 per game for their 16 games, and that helped propel them up to a 4th place finish. The field featured 15 of the top 20 teams in the national power rankings, with Calumet College of St Joseph charging to victory on the final day; they finished with 8962 – just 15 pins ahead of Wisconsin-Whitewater (8947). Mount Mercy, with 8817, was third.

Sophomore Tyler Close led the scoring, as he rolled 1143 for his five games. Other team members included Kendric Siders (1075-five games), Kevin Magnuson (843-four games), Keaten Bieri (784-four games), Lucas Hersrud (777-four games), Devin Richards (376-two games), Evan Flath (237-one game), and Evan White.

On the women's side, St. Ambrose came away with a 26th-place showing in the 55-team field. The Bees recorded a 7272 pinfall. The top-three finishers were Mount Mercy (8163), Judson (8032) and Northwestern Ohio (7989).

Team members were Marissa Bills (980-five games), Kayla Staub (923-five games), Emma Taft (910-five games), Brooklyn Schlapkohl (803-five games), Shay Edwards (449-three games), Gianna Koszut (290-two games) and Molly Bramble.

Teams enjoy a three-week layoff before competing in the Kohawk Challenge on Feb. 7-8 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
